ROCHELLE LAWSON – Owner and Manager of the newly established Academy in the Northern Suburbs.
My love for netball started when I tried on my netball takkies for the first time in grade one, with two ponytails and parents going crazy next to the court. I’ve never looked back since.
I have been very fortunate to have represented my province and country at various levels. I played Western Province Netball from 2003 and I am still part of the team. Also made Western Cape from 2007 and SA schools netball in 2009 and 2010. Had the privilege to play for the SPAR baby Proteas at the u21 netball world cup in Australia in 2012. In 2013 received my first senior Protea cap and had the incredible opportunity to represent my country in green and gold at the Senior Netball World cup in Australia.
Love for sport made it easy for me to choose a career. I studied Sports Management and decided to combine it with teaching, as I absolutely love children. Watching them do what you teach them makes extremely satisfying to coach! I have gained a lot of experience in my studies as a sport kindekinethesist working with children, au pairing and babysitting.
What keeps me going?
That constant feeling of improvement after every game. Learning something new every time you walk off court. Knowing next time, you can be better and stronger. “If your legs get tired let your heart do the work”
That constant sound of my parents screaming and supporting (they have matching hoodies that say netball mom and netball dad!) I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world! They have not missed one single netball match. Think my mom gets more exercise off court than me on court!

My daughter Ruby has attended the academy for the past few years. Every Saturday morning, no matter how late she gets to bed Friday nights, she peels herself off her pillow, because she knows that missing a session is not an option – too much valuable up-skilling takes place. Besides the invaluable learning, one of the biggest advantages of the sessions is that every girl that attends is serious about netball & wants to be there. There’s no back biting amongst the girls – everyone’s aim is to get along & focus on self-improvement. One of the most important things for me is that my daughter steps out of her comfort zone & meets girls from a much wider spectrum than her own backyard. She has connected with a girl from another school in such a deep way & it’s heart-warming to see their relationship grow. Ruby’s netball level is only @ the high standard it is because of her time @ the academy. She would never have been able to achieve what she has @ school alone. – Nichol Kurgan
Our 2 daughters aged 10 and 12 have been training with Lushinka for 3 years now. They went from shy novices to confident proactive players under the enthusiastic and nurturing coaching of Lushinka, Colleen and all their assistants. They are in awe of and inspired by the achievements of all the coaches. This contributes to their eagerness to attend training every Saturday morning. This has come at a very critical stage of their development and maturation and we certainly have no regrets about making the decision to sign the girls up. Keep it up Lushinka and team. – Azgher and Faheema Karjieker
How fantastic is that. Southern Suburbs makes a comeback. And all have been coached by you guys. Apparently they like a standing shooter who can catch a ball anywhere. Can’t believe how far you guys have gotten Astrid. I am so thankful to you all! X – Vicky Hind
